Lilly operated a juice stand for her husband’s citrus groves but always seem to have the problem of getting juice stains on her clothes. Her customers loved the dresses and they were soon nicknamed “lilies.” She soon realized fashion was more of her forte and began her own clothing business. To this day, the retailer still produces bright and colorful prints and patterns. Each one is hand designed and printed in the company’s studio. The store has since expanded from just dresses to tops, bottoms, kids clothing, shoes, accessories, home items, gifts, menswear, bedding and a maternity collection. In 2010 their first Bridal Collection was released. Lilly Pulitzer is very well known for their collections of sorority apparel and gifts which incorporate the sorority’s symbols into the print. Lilly herself has been famously named the “Queen of Prep” and this nickname is apparent in her designs. Some of the most famous women to wear Lilly Pulitzer are Jacqueline Kennedy and her daughter Caroline along with members of the Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families.
