Back To School Gifts
Did you know?
In August, many states offer a 'sales tax holiday' on school supplies & clothing. Click the learn more link to see if your state participates.
School shopping can be expensive and a hassle for many parents with teenagers or college age students. Too often you take your kids from store to store buying things here and there and before you know it, the credit card bill is in the several hundreds. Worse yet a lot of kids don't appreciate the money that is being spent on new outfits, supplies, or dorm room amenities. Each year its almost expected that mom or dad will open up their bank account so they can look fashionable without considering the financial burden.
A create way to combat this while helping to teach your son or daughter financial responsibility is to set a budget ahead of time, and give them a Visa or MasterCard gift card to do all of their school shopping. This will force your child to shop smart, plan ahead of time, and help them to understand how far a dollar goes. Your son or daughter can use their back to school card to shop at any retail location or online. You can also register the card once received to view the transaction history. And you can rest easy knowing that the card can't be used to get cash from an ATM.
Even if your child is a pre-teen and you will be doing the shopping with them, this will give them a sense of trust while helping to teach them financial responsibility.
Before sending your child, niece, nephew, or friend off for school shopping, plan ahead and change things up this year. Back to school gift cards can be used at practically any retail location. Instead of getting caught up arguing about the latest fashion trends or what they do and do not need, give them the ability to make the tough decisions. It will likely prove to be a more enjoyable exercise for your child and take the pressure off of you.
