On Thursday, September 19th, 2013, the date of the 10-year domain anniversary, employees of GiftCards.com were greeted with a melancholic “Grandma” appearing on the company monitors. “Don’t look at her, she’s creepy,” I was warned upon entering the building. Why would the company put someone so gloomy on display on such a landmark day? No one wants a bummer on a birthday!
It turns out that the “sad grandma” had her own purpose. Her lonely, unsmiling face was uncomfortable – but she reminded us of how unfortunate a day without a smile truly is, driving home our motto and our purpose: to make ‘em smile : )
For the past 10 years, GiftCards.com has been making people smile, and we hope to continue to be able to do so for many years to come. Ten years is a long time, especially in “Internet-years.” This is a fact that GiftCards.com CMO, Carlos Tribino alluded to during the 10-year Birthday Party that afternoon, putting it into perspective by mentioning that many of our employees’ own children are not yet even 10 years of age, but this company, the “baby” of so many, including CEO Jason Wolfe, has been standing proud and making people smile for an entire decade.
Jason reminded us that when he first built the company as DirectCertificates.com, he was trying to pave the way of the future with the then-nascent gift card industry. He had a vision of where gifting was going, and that was in the direction of gift cards. Now, Jason believes that digital and mobile gift credits are the next big thing, and inspired us once again with his vision for the next 10 years and beyond. We look forward to our role in the future of gifting.
So, we celebrated our milestone with poppers, noisemakers, and streamers galore, singing “Happy Birthday” with Grandma. As she finally graced us with a welcomed smile, we were once again reminded what our company is all about.
We hope to continue to make Grandma and all of you happy, day in and day out. Here’s to many more heartwarming smiles! Happy 10th birthday, GiftCards.com!
