What to do with those unwanted gift cards?
December 2009 - By Herb Weisbaum
They're billed as the perfect gift. But, let's be honest -- sometimes you get a gift card you don't want or can't use.
You can't take them back to the store, but you can get rid of them online.
Sure, there's always eBay, but there are also sites like PlasticJungle.com, GiftCards.com GiftCardsAgain.com and SwapaGift.com.
"They'll actually buy the unwanted store gift cards from you as a consumer, verify the balance and then resell it to other shoppers," says Kelli Grant, senior consumer reporter at Smart Money.
Grant says you're not going to get face value, but it's better than throwing the unwanted card in a drawer.
"How much you get is going to depend on how in demand the store is. If we're talking about a major chain like the Gap you might get pretty close to face value because they know they're going to be able to sell it, but if it's something for like a small retailer or something unusual, then you might have to take as much as a 30-percent discount."
Some of these swap sites give you the option to sell the card yourself. Grant says, let them buy it from you. That's safer and you get your money in just a couple of days.
