Local Gift Cards
Do the local gift cards expire?
Yes. Each local gift card runs on the Discover Network which is different than a traditional merchant issued gift card. The expiration date is 7 YEARS from the purchase date and is printed on the front of the card.
How do Local Gift Cards Work?
Our Local gift card works exactly like any other prepaid gift card. Each Local Gift Card is set up to work on the Discover Network. So when you find a local business that you want to buy a gift card for, when the merchant accepts the card it is run as a Discover Prepaid Card on their credit card terminal.
Why is there a fee for some Local Gift Cards & Not others?
When you see a ‘Fee Free’ button next to the local business you are shopping for, the merchant is paying the processing fees for your card so you ONLY pay for the card value! Standard shipping for Fee Free merchants is also FREE. We have direct relationships with merchants who are flagged as Fee Free and you’ll notice that the card has the merchant’s logo on it, and they may also provide a coupon or provide bonus dollars for purchasing their card.
I’m a merchant and I want to partner with GiftCards.com to create my own gift card program. How do I do this?
We are always looking for merchants to partner with and are eager to hear from you. Go to http://partners.giftcards.com to learn more about our Local Gift Card program and sign up.
How do I see if my city has any Discover Local Merchants available in the area?
It's easy. Click on the Local menu option at the top of the page and our system will automatically detect where you are and show a listing of all available merchants in your area. You can also search in other areas or find a business by name or category by using the search boxes on that page.
I’m not from the area. How do I know that a merchant offers satisfactory services?
We offer multiple sources of merchant reviews that are updated constantly throughout the day. You will always be aware of how other consumers view any of our merchants.
What if a merchant’s location changes?
No problem. Through our Google Map integration, we can show you the most up to date merchant location details.
Do I have to search for a specific merchant name?
No. Our search was built to allow you to easily search by Merchant Name, a specific Category or by a specific location. You can even specify the merchant results that appear down to a five mile radius. This allows you to really localize your purchase for the recipient.
Do I have to use the Local Gift Card at the merchant that was printed in the card Carrier or Greeting Card?
That depends. If the gift card is NOT branded with the merchant’s logo on it, it can be used at ANY business in the US that accepts Discover. For these gift cards, the purchaser is simply suggesting you use it at that business.
If the gift card HAS the businesses logo on it, that means we have a direct relationship with them, and the card may only be good for the business. In some cases, the business we have a direct relationship may have opted to allow the card to be good not only for their business, but also to any related business in their category. Refer to the terms & conditions for your gift card to see where all it can be used.
My card was declined. What is the problem?
First, check to make sure that the balance of your card has enough funds to cover your purchase. If not, you can still use the card but you have to inform the cashier of the amount on your card so they can process it as two separate transactions. Second, if you are using your card at a restaurant, hotel, or spa, please note that their credit card systems are most likely set up to authorize any credit, gift, or debit purchases for 20% MORE than the transaction amount. This is to account for a potential tip. Just let the business know how much is left on your card and to only run it for that amount. If neither of these items solves your problem, please contact us anytime at 1-877-944-3822 to speak with a support representative.
Will I be charged any additional fees to use my local gift card?
There are no fees charged for using your gift card for purchases. However there is an inactivity fee if your card is not used for 12 consecutive months. The inactivity fee is $4.95 per month.
What if a merchant refuses to accept my gift card?
Our local gift cards are a Discover Network product. If the merchant refuses to accept the card but they allow for Discover payments, they are violating their terms of service for accepting Discover. In most cases, you can just use your card at another merchant who accepts Discover, or we would be happy to exchange your card. Contact our customer support line 24x7 to report any problems at 1-877-944-3822.
Am I able to customize my Local gift card?
Today you cannot customize your Discover Local gift card, but we do offer up to five professional card designs for each category.

The GiftCards.com Gift Card is NOT a credit card, it is a PREPAID debit card. However, your card should be used, at the point of sale terminal, as a credit transaction. We know, it is confusing. The gift card carries a fixed amount determined by the purchaser at the time of purchase. Each time the gift card is used, the purchase amount is deducted from the available balance.
How does a GiftCards.com Gift Card differ from a traditional credit card?
The GiftCards.com Gift Card is branded and resembles regular credit and debit cards. The difference: prepaid cards are spending tools that have been funded, in advance, by the card purchaser. Once this amount is completely spent, the recipient can either dispose of the card or retain it as a keepsake of the original gift. By contrast, traditional credit cards are not only for making purchases, but are designed as potential, long-term tools for credit-building and personal financial transactions.

However, we offer a reloadable prepaid card with ATM capabilities at www.omnicard.com.
Why was my GiftCards.com-purchased gift card declined when I tried to use it?
There may be a few reasons for gift card being declined:
1. Did the card get declined at a restaurant, spa/salon, hotel or other service industry location? Credit card readers at restaurants are designed to accommodate gratuity. Since the standard gratuity is 20%, many of these terminals are pre-programmed to automatically preauthorize for the total bill plus the gratuity and/or other incidental expenses - whether you intend to add a tip on the card or not. This is called a tolerance factor. If the amount available on the card is not enough to cover the actual bill plus the tolerance factor, the transaction may be declined.
2. Did the card get declined at a gas pump? When using gift cards at a gas station, avoid swiping the card at the pump. It is best to take the card inside to the attendant. Because the final amount of your gas purchase is unknown at the time you swipe your card, the gas pump automatically places a $75-$100 authorization hold on the card in order to anticipate your final purchase amount. When the actual price has been finalized, any unused funds will be added back to your card in 3-5 business days. If the cards value is less than this authorization hold, the transaction will decline.
3. Did the merchant attempt to use the card as debit with a PIN? Although the GiftCards.com gift card may say "DEBIT" on the front, it is NOT linked with a PIN number. Advise the cashier to run the card as a credit transaction and not as debit. Purchases that are run through as debit will be declined.
4. Can the gift card balance cover the entire purchase price? If not, use another form of payment to pay for the difference first, and then use your gift card to pay for the remaining balance of the purchase.
Can I use my GiftCards.com Gift Card for gasoline purchases?
Yes. However, when using gift cards at a gas station, avoid swiping the card at the pump. It is best to take the card inside to the attendant. Because the final amount of your gas purchase is unknown at the time you swipe your card, the gas pump automatically places a $75-$100 authorization hold on the card in order to anticipate your final purchase amount. When the actual price has been finalized, any unused funds will be added back to your card in 3-6 business days. Watch our Video Help here.
Can I use my GiftCards.com Gift Card at restaurants?
Yes, but please be aware that restaurant merchants are designed to accommodate gratuity. Since the standard gratuity is 20%, their terminals are pre-programmed to automatically preauthorize for the total bill PLUS the gratuity-whether you intend to add a tip on the card or not. This is called a Tolerance Factor. If the amount available on the card is not enough to cover the actual bill plus the tolerance factor, the transaction will be declined.
Watch our Video Help here.
Can I make a purchase for more than the amount remaining on my gift card?
To make a purchase for more than the amount remaining on your gift card, you will need to know the remaining balance on your card and pay the difference first with cash, check, credit or debit card. Then use your gift card to pay for the remainder, or the last portion of the purchase. Merchants can use multiple forms of payment to pay for your purchases.
For example: You have a $25.00 gift card and are making a purchase for $35.00. Pay the $10.00 by cash, check, credit or debit card and then have the cashier run your gift card for the remaining $25.00 balance.
Remember, you can easily check your balance anytime by clicking here or calling our toll free number (1-877-944-3822) that is provided on the back of the GiftCards.com Gift Card.

We encourage you to use the entire gift amount before the gift card expires. When your card expires, the funds will no longer be available. The card and the underlying funds expire at the same time.
How do I use my Gift Card?
Knowing your card's balance before you shop will help assure your gift card is accepted as merchants cannot tell how much money is remaining on the card.
To use the card at a point of sale terminal:
1. Run the card as a credit transaction.
The card does not have a PIN. Selecting "Debit" will cause the card to be declined.

Can the gift card ever have a negative balance?

GiftCards.com cards cannot be used for money gram services such as Western Union, PayPal accounts, adult websites, and for recurring bill payments.
Why is the merchant asking me for a PIN?
Occasionally, the authorization systems at some merchants may insist that the gift card be run as a debit card and that a PIN must be entered. In most cases, if you hit 'clear'and then 'enter' on the PIN pad, it will run the card as credit. Your card should always be run as credit.
Purchasing Issues
If you experience difficulty using your gift card for online or telephone purchases it is possible that the address that was used at the time the gift card was purchased is different from your current address. Please note, GiftCards.com is not responsible for returns or credits onto your gift card; you are solely responsible for working directly with the merchant that you are requesting a refund or credit for previously purchased items.
