We just returned from the MasterCard Connections conference held in Scottsdale, AZ at the beautiful Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. This years conference was different as they combined prepaid, credit and debit rather than having separate mini-conferences for each.
As always, MasterCard spared no expense on putting on a top notch show.
This years keynote speaker was Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com, the $1b+ online shoe retailer. Tony’s story and passion for what he does is inspirational. A lot has been written about the shoe giants exemplary customer service and the company has subsequently become know more for their friendly support and nontraditional methods. One would think that their core mission is customer support. Although its important, Tony said that Company Culture is their #1 mission because happy employees service customers better. Potentially employees who do not fit in with the Zappos culture no matter how talented they may be simply don’t get hired.
After the first day of educational sessions, a silent auction was held to benefit Stand up to Cancer. Nearly $50k was raised on auctioned items including MLB World Series tickets, autographed sports memorabilia, a PGA experience at TPC Sawgrass, and a holiday shopping trip in NYC. To the right is a photo of the outdoor dining area near where the auction was held.
Following dinner, the evening was concluded with a private concert by 8 time Grammy nominee Jason Mraz.
