In late 2011 we realized the local merchants were at a significant disadvantage to national retailers. Going into our local grocery store we see the same 50 merchant gift cards year over year. We thought, “why can’t we offer a local merchant gift card, branded on GiftCards.com – and be the Internets’ gift card End Cap?”

In researching this question we found that no one had been able to do this with success. We had the idea to partner with Discover and use the Discover Network to find and track transactions. We had already built our own on-demand gift card printing facility that is Discover certified. So we combined the two and became the industry’s first to provide local merchants a custom on-demand gift card program using the Discover Network, fully branded for local businesses.

Prior to launching we conducted 3 separate focus groups with a variety of local business owners. Based on their feedback, we settled on a fair pricing model and launched in August 2012.
