The Home Depot gift card on holder

“Gifting Made Easy” by Gift Card Girlfriend

One of my dearest friends is a retired electrician. He is also a talented carpenter. Earlier this year, I asked him to build a bench for my kitchen so I could push the dining table into the corner and still have plenty of seating for family meals. Though I considered building the bench myself, after looking at several tutorials on how to build a breakfast nook, I decided the job required tools, skills and time I didn’t have. Gene graciously agreed to help. (And by help, I mean build the bench for me.)

The thing about Gene is he doesn’t do anything half way. I would have been happy with one of the Ikea hack benches I saw online. That’s not what I got. My sweet friend spent a couple of weeks creating a beautiful piece of furniture complete with hidden hinges, raised panels and trim that snugs perfectly into the baseboards. Now my breakfast nook is so beautiful, I call it “the crown jewel of the condo.” Even though I can’t fully repay this man for the time and expertise he poured into making my kitchen more functional, I wanted to give him a thank you gift anyway.

Given that this “DIY Guy” likes to walk the aisles of home improvement stores, I got him a gift card to The Home Depot nearby, one of his favorite places to shop. Using the free printable gift card holder below, I added a little handiwork of my own to turn this simple gift card into the perfect thank you gift for a lover of all things The Home Depot.

Below are the steps needed to recreate this thank you gift for the DIY’er in your life:

Step 1: Buy The Home Depot Gift Card

One of the things I love most about The Home Depot is that the store carries the best selection of gift card designs. They’ve got gift cards for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, housewarming, weddings, birthdays and more. For my builder friend (who is in his 70’s, by the way), I picked out “The Man Card.” This makes me smile every time I think about giving it to him. With this free printable gift card holder, however, the traditional orange The Home Depot gift card design is a perfect fit. Below are some easy ways to buy The Home Depot gift card:

Step 2: Download Printable Gift Card Holder

This printable gift card holder is perfect for any home improvement gift card whether it’s The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sears, Ace Hardware or a local hardware store in your town. All you have to do to make it work is put a different piece of card stock paper behind the printable. If you buy a Lowe’s gift card, for example, then add a piece of blue or red card stock paper to the printable and it will all match nicely. If you buy a Sears gift card, then add a bright blue piece of card stock to the printable. Though this printable matches The Home Depot gift card perfectly, it doesn’t have to be the only choice.

Step 3: Make the Gift Card Holder

After downloading the gift card holder, print it on a color printer using “best quality” and “actual size” settings. (Do not select “shrink to fit” or any other setting that will change the size of the printed .pdf image.) White, card stock paper measuring 8-1/2 x 11 inches works best. Once printed, use the guide marks and a straight-edge paper cutter to trim the gift card holder.

For a little pop of color and to make the card more three-dimensional, I glued a piece of orange card stock to the gift card holder. Then I found this adorable masking tape that looks like a tape measure to attach the card. Don’t you love it?
